Disclaimer, I’m not bi but have had a lot of discussions with bi people about biphobia and this is some stuff that other people who aren’t bi need to Really Learn. This is especially intended for non-mspec queer people.
- Bi people aren’t “half gay, half straight”
- Bi people aren’t Gay Lite™
- Bi people aren’t “basically straight,” even if their relationship is “straight passing”
- Straight passing privilege is not a thing because erasure isn’t actually a privilege
- Biphobia is still a huge issue
- Gay and lesbian people can perpetuate biphobia and bisexual oppression
- Bi people are not “lesser” members of the LGBT+ community
- Bi people can speak on homophobia on the same level as lesbian and gay people
- Lesbian and gay people are not authorities on biphobia
- A bisexual person is always bisexual, regardless of who they’re with or whether they’re with anyone at all
- Bi people always belong in LGBT+ spaces
- People who aren’t bi should work to support the bisexual community and end biphobia. Yes, gay people, this includes you.
- Bi people aren’t predatory
- Being bisexual is not a privilege
- “Bihet” is not a thing
- Refusing to accept biphobia from gay people isn’t homophobic
- Bisexuality isn’t inherently transphobic or exorsexist
- Bi people aren’t “traitors” to the gay community
- Bi WLW are valid, bi MLM are valid, and bi nonbinary people are valid
- Bi women dating men are still bisexual, bi men dating women are still bisexual
- Bi people are not inherently promiscuous (but there’s nothing wrong with promiscuity)
- Biphobia is not less real or less valid than homophobia or lesbophobia
- Bi people have as much of a right to LGBT+ resources, spaces, funds, etc as lesbians and gay people
- Bi people aren’t “dirty” or untrustworthy
- Biphobia is a necessary separation from homophobia and bi people face issues that are unique to them
- Bi people are allowed to reclaim the word “queer,” and bi MLM are allowed to reclaim the f-slur
- Bi people aren’t “dangerous” to gay people or lesbians
- Bi people are allowed to be angry at the way they get treated by others in the community
- Bi people are the utmost experts on bisexuality and biphobia
And last, but certainly not least,
- Bi people are wonderful human beings and valuable members of the LGBT+ community
And if you’re trying to think up a situation to “disprove” any of these points, don’t bother. You’re boring. Biphobia is boring and you should feel bad.
